How to Clean a Diamond Ring

A woman's jewellery collection is a precious thing. If you happen to own a diamond ring, whether it is your engagement ring, something you received for a special milestone or just a little gift to yourself, keeping it shining and beautiful is paramount. But as the metal and gem are both delicate, it is important you do it the right way. Below are two different methods you could use to clean your diamond ring.

Home cleaning

Begin by filling a small bowl with warm water. Add a small amount of liquid dish soap – usually about one teaspoon – and gently stir the water to evenly distribute the soap. Place the ring in the solution and leave it for 15 minutes to loosen dirt particles and penetrate built-up oils or residues.

After 15 minutes, remove the ring from the solution and use a jewellery cleaning cloth to clean the ring. Be thorough but gentle, focusing on the pockets around the diamond’s setting and any engravings on the metal band where dirt may have amassed.

Once this is done, rinse the ring under a tap. Make sure you cover the drain in case you drop your diamond ring. Rinsing will help remove dirt particles and soap residue. Once this step is complete, gently buff the ring with a dry, lint-free cloth to polish the metal and prevent water spotting. If you own a special chemically treated polishing cloth, you can also use this. However, check the fine print first to make sure it won't damage the metal or diamond.
